Sunday 10th May 2009-05-24
A-MAY-ZING DAY!
TAKELEY GOALKEEPER NOT ONLY STOPPED THREE PENALTIES, HE SCORED A PENALTY, TOO!
TAKELEY FC 2, PARK STREET VILLAGE 2. After Extra Time, 1-1 90 minutes, TAKELEY won 3-1 on Penalties
Takeley goal keeper James May not only stopped three penalties, he scored a penalty, too! Don Watters adds yet another prestigious trophy to his CV. A great end to 2008-2009 season for Takeley Football Club.
There was no indication in the first period of this Capital Feeder Counties League Anagram Records Trophy Final how exciting the game would become. It was only into five minutes that the initiative was sought by Park Street Village. Goalkeeper (PSV) Tony Kerby hit a long ball clearance well into the Takeley half of the park, with the ball picked up by Matty NEWMAN and with a first time kick he belted the ball into the back of the net.
5 mins…PARK STREET VILLAGE 1, TAKELEY FC 0. (Newman)
This was to become the story of the day’s play. On 17 minutes a similar long kick found PSV centre forward James Hill, but his shot was a foot wide of the upright. Takeley played their usual close passing pattern of football and on 22 minutes came close to scoring with Chris Grove passing through a huddle of close marking Park Village players to Michael Kennedy and his accurate centre fell with Chris Grove unable to control the bobbling ball. Takeley continually threatened but were unable to find goal and a break by Matty Newman, past Mark Watters was only countered as Chris Dorrian tackled the fast moving Newman, with his shot hitting the side netting. Tony Kerby was soon again able to complete his massive clearance into the path of ever vigilant Matty Newman, as the bounce of the ball beat Charlie Pollard, but the opportunity of the moment was lost as the ball crossed the goalmouth out of reach of the PSV forwards. The final five minutes of the first half ended with unremarkable movements.

The second period began with fired up spirit for Takeley and it was within five minutes before Chris Grove headed wide from a Gregg Williams corner kick. James Amott headed inches high from a Kennedy corner. Kennedy tie with Amott was tipped over by Kerby. PSV could have taken a further lead when Gregg Williams free kick hit the wall and was played to Newman, he crossed to Seeby but a wild wasted shot from Matt Day went out of play. On the hour of play determination by the Essex Senior League team lead to Michael Kennedy finding Chris GROVE for him to put the score on level terms.
60 mins…PARK STREET VILLAGE 1, TAKELEY FC 1. (Grove)
Charlie Pollard playing so securely at the back came forward to head over yet another Gregg Williams corner. Shortly afterwards Joe Galsworthy without his normal agile running fired in from outside the penalty box wide of the nearside upright. The first Yellow cards were raised after a commotion between Gregg Williams (TFC) and Steve Seeby (PSV) at 69 minutes. Following the incident Chris Grove made a weak attempt to hit on the turn from Joe Galsworthy’s pass and another attempt by Joe Galsworthy was turned away for a corner. James May had hardly been busy until a free kick drive by James Hill caused the keeper to dive full length, only to see the ball just wide. In action on 84 minutes Tony Kerby struck out with his foot to foil Joe Galsworthy’s shot for goal. With time moving to 87 minutes Stefan Szajewski was caught for hand ball and the free kick only 22 yards out was taken by James Hill. The ricochet off the Takeley wall was precursor to two attempts by PSV being scrambled away. Joe Galsworthy with two minutes remaining of real time was upended and injured by Matt Day, the Gregg Williams’ free kick hit high over the bar.
90 mins…PARK STREET VILLAGE 1, TAKELEY FC 1.

Into extra time and Joe Galsworthy had a shot saved, which Tony Kerby took advantage of with a long searing kick deep into Takeley territory, which gave Matty Newman another opportunity for PSV to take the lead. James May again made a tremendous save. Clearing the ball up field Joe Galsworthy was again gifted a chance, but his shot lifted over the crossbar. Within seconds of extra time half way stage James May took cleanly Matty Newman’s next chance. However, Andy Murphey crashed a shot against the Takeley bar and Steve SEEBY was on hand to take the return and put Park Street Village back into the driving seat, as the referee raised the half time whistle.
105 mins… PARK STREET VILLAGE 2, TAKELEY FC 1. (Seeby).

The second period of extra time began with Joe Galsworthy hitting an opportunity too early and wide of the mark. At the opposite end PSV forced James May to make another outstanding save. The ball cracked up field and Joe Galsworthy had his shot stopped on the goal line and come back into his path, for a shot too high. Again on the attack Joe Galsworthy was subject to a nasty tackle, which forced him to leave the field, his continually injured ankle again weakened, replaced by youngster Louis Bristow. Mark Watters missed a great chance as he was unable to reach a cross from Josh Colson, on the line. A collision between goalkeeper James May and Steve Seeby prevented PSV from taking a further lead. At the other end Watters again in front of goal headed into Tony Kerby’s hands from Grove’s pass. Stefan Szajewski was awarded a Yellow Card on 116 minutes. On 119 minutes the eventual chance came for Takeley, following a missed 25 yard shot by Matty Newman (PSV) was cleared up field to hand Mark WATTERS a six yard chance to equalise again for Takeley.

Man of the Match for Takeley was undoubtedly MICHAEL GLIDDEN. His tackling was precise, his work throughout incredible with few errors, persistent to retain and recover the ball mark his record as superb.
Goal keeper James May had a game to fondly remember, but was rarely called upon, particularly in the first half of the match. When he was tested he carried out great judgement and in the penalty taking he was remarkable.
For PSV their system of hit the ball hard and long was engineered with precision and Matty Newman could have , but for the defensive work of Takeley Goalkeeper, Pollard, Szajewski and Watters. The link man Michael Glidden the fulcrum.
Referee Mr Shaun Cavanagh supported by Mr Mick Price and Mr Lee Lawson deserve recognition.
What a pleasure to have such a benefit of first class officials. The game ran smoothly with few criticisms from either side.
